Remembering a wonderful president who taught us the value of independence and freedom!

The 18th of July 2025 is known as Mandela Day, an international day in honour of South African democracy, celebrating freedom and unity inspired by former President and Nobel Peace Prize winner, Nelson Mandela. IGrow Wealth Investments is proud to join in commemorating this day as we reflect on the incredible lessons Madiba brought us.

Remembering a remarkable man of leadership

Nelson Mandela was South Africa’s first democratically elected president and had a mission to instil justice and reconciliation after the many years of Apartheid. He prioritised freedom and forgiveness over retribution for past wrongs.

In 2009, the United Nations (UN) declared the 18th of July “Mandela Day” to celebrate Mandela’s birthday and encourage everyone to view the world through his eyes. This Nelson Mandela Day, we honour Madiba’s legacy.

The 2025, Mandela Day theme is how we can overcome the struggles of our nation, and reflect on Mandela’s beliefs in freedom through unity and uplifting others.

What is the “67 Minutes Challenge?”

An aspect of Mandela Day is the 67 Minutes initiative. Mandela spent 67 years fighting for justice, and in memory of this, South Africans dedicate 67 minutes of their day on the 18th July, to charity or giving back through community service. Some people volunteer in shelters, help with neighbourhood clean-ups, and the like, or take time to gather donations and hand them over to special charities.

How will Johannesburg celebrate Mandela Day?

The Mandela Day Walk and Run

This year, there will be a Mandela Day Walk and Run taking place on the 19th July in Johannesburg at the DP World Wanderers Stadium in Illovo, Johannesburg. This is to celebrate unity, movement, and purpose.

“This is more than a race. It’s a call to action. Intending to reach 10,000 participants, this year’s event invites South Africans from all walks of life to walk or run in support of a cause that truly matters. Whether you choose the 5km walk, the 10km or the 21km, every step taken will honour Madiba’s legacy and help build a more just society.” (Source)  All proceeds are donated to the Nelson Mandela Foundation’s work to fight poverty and inequality.

The Mandela Day Bassline Fest

This Mandela Day, the Nelson Mandela Foundation and Bassline are collaborating for the Bassline FEST on Friday, the 18th July 2025. It will take place at the Gold Reef City Lyric Theatre in Johannesburg. (Source)

The show will feature Grammy-nominated MÖRDA and the Grammy Award-winning Soweto Gospel Choir, with a special song dedicated to Nelson Mandela. Bassline was started in 1994 and was inspired by the belief that anything can be achieved if you put your mind to it, and by always seeking positivity. (Source)

“This show is more than just a performance by incredible artists; it’s a celebration of love, community, and collective action. It’s about bringing people together through storytelling, music, and shared purpose. We want people to take action, to create change in each other’s lives, while honouring someone who inspired us to become better versions of ourselves,” says Brad Holmes, the founder of Bassline. The Nelson Mandela Foundation will hold an exhibition showcasing the Life and Times of Nelson Mandela, an experience looking back at Madiba’s journey from a rural upbringing to becoming a global icon. Guests will be able to reflect on Madiba’s legacy and his values. (Source)

How will Cape Town celebrate Nelson Mandela Day?

On Saturday, 26th July, the 3rd Annual Children’s Book fair will take place at the Thusong Centre in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, hosted by Uhlanga Books. It aims to address the literacy gap in under-resourced community centres. (Source)

“Rooted in the theme ‘Kwathi ke kaloku Ngantsomi’, the fair honours Africa’s rich oral traditions. The phrase, in isiXhosa, is traditionally used to begin folktales and means “Once upon a time, in a story…” (Source)

“The book fair is about more than reading; it’s about visibility, identity, and power,” says Zimkitha Zilo, the founder of Uhlanga Books. “It’s about reminding our children that their stories matter, that imagination is a right, and that language is a bridge, not a barrier.” (Source)

Children engage in storytelling groups in multiple languages, fun games, and reading nooks. Each child leaves with their own copy of a book to take back home. (Source)

Mandela championed education and believed it had the power to change the world. He believed in lifelong learning and having knowledge accessible. (Source)

IGrow’s supports knowledge sharing and financial education through our abundant online resources

IGrow’s founder and CEO, Jacques Fouché, spent a few years as a young man working as a porter in a removal firm. He remembers vividly what it felt like to be doing physical labour in blue overalls, with low prospects for getting out of that low pay grade. He still has his first salary cheque framed to remind him of that time, and the motivation and self-education it took to pull himself up and out, and get financially free. For him, the vehicle of his success was books and seminars about having a wealth mindset and property investment, and this is what made him the man he is today, head of a group of companies with over 200 employees and over 170,000 investors owning buy-to-let real estate to build their own financial freedom.

While others make money from their knowledge, he is passionate about sharing what he has learned with ordinary South Africans. He would like to see many more people gain financial freedom through investment in valuable, income-generating assets and be able to leave wealth to their loved ones as a lasting legacy, however humbly they may have started out in life.

Our founder aims to educate everyday South Africans so they can start investing in property and get on the path to financial freedom.

IGrow’s Mandela Day Commitment

In honour of Mandela Day 2025, IGrow is donating to Heartlands Baby Sanctuary. This is our way of giving back as a company to babies and young children in need. If you would also like to contribute to this worthy cause, you can view their wish list here or even sponsor a cot on an ongoing basis.

“[At Heartlands Baby Sanctuary] we continue to step in and respond to the needs of little vulnerable children affected by poverty, alcoholism, drug addiction, unwanted pregnancies, child abuse, and other social problems, which continue to devastate the communities in which we work.” (Source)

“As each child enters our facility, our steadfast commitment is to ensure that the child is effectively cared for and prepared for discharge back into the community as soon as possible, either through reunification with their parents or family members, placed in foster care, transferred to other long-term facilities, or adopted.”  (Source)

Heartlands cares for newborns to children up to 6 years old, providing them with a home and access to a multidisciplinary healthcare and wellness team until they find their ideal long-term home. (Source)

IGrow is very happy to be able to contribute to this sanctuary caring for young babies and children.
